Teeth Whitening

Professional teeth whitening enable us to have dazzling smiles with minimum fuss. If your teeth have lost their luster, Dr. Magid and the Livingston Smile Design team can restore your smile to its former glory using safe, simple bleaching methods. Read on to find out how.

Stains on teeth

All sorts of things cause discoloration of teeth. Smoking, red wine, and coffee are the usual culprits, but medication and age can also be responsible. Stains on teeth fall into two categories: extrinsic and intrinsic. Essentially, extrinsic means superficial stains on the surface of the teeth, whereas intrinsic refers to stains between cracks in your tooth enamel or deep within your dentin. While whitening toothpastes and mouth rinses can remove some extrinsic staining, only specially-developed whitening products used by dental professionals will be capable of removing stubborn, intrinsic stains and giving you a beautiful white smile.

Two ways to a winning smile

At Livingston Smile Design we have two teeth whitening treatments that will tackle even the most stubborn stains. Both involve simple, pain-free procedures with fast results that are performed either in-office or at home. In-office, we’ll first help you decide which shade of white you’d like for your teeth and then we’ll use specialized whitening gels to transform your smile in around one hour. If you’d prefer to whiten at home, we’ll create a custom bleaching tray that sits comfortably over your teeth and give you prescription-strength gels of varying lengths to take home. You simply apply the gel to the tray and wear it before you go to sleep at night for fantastic results in a matter of weeks.

How does whitening work?

The whitening gel which is applied to teeth contains an active ingredient (usually carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide) that penetrates the enamel to target the deeper discoloration. Oxygen molecules produced by the whitening agent then react with stain molecules, breaking apart the bonds that hold them together. This happens from tooth to tooth, leaving you with a brighter, whiter smile.
